What is an annuity contract?

By Jakob Jelling

An annuity contract is the contract that you need to take out before you can get an annuity. This is a contract between all of the people who are involved in the annuity, and it will help you to determine how much money you'll be getting through your investment in an annuity. Generally, the annuity contract will involve two or more people, including the insurance company that is issuing the annuity. The other person who is involved in the annuity is you. Generally, if the annuity is based on your age, then you will be considered the annuitant. If you are going to get the insurance company's payout, then you will also be the owner of the annuity. However, the owner and the annuitant do not have to be the same person.

If you are putting together an annuity contract, you can also determine whether or not you want to name a separate beneficiary as well. The beneficiary is the person who will receive the benefit of the annuity if you die before you can get the money yourself. The beneficiary will become the owner of the annuity if the original owner dies, as well.

Before you decide to sign an annuity contract with an insurance company, you should decide what type of an annuity you want to sign up for. The two different types of annuities have different risks and returns associated with them. For instance, if you get a fixed annuity, then you will have a guaranteed rate. This means that you are guaranteed to get all of the principle and insurance rate that was promised to you. If you would like a chance at better returns, then you should look for a variable annuity. While these have higher risks associated with them, you will also have a chance at getting higher returns for your money.

There might be a fee associated with signing an annuity contract depending on which company you decide to go to for an annuity. Variable annuities are more likely to have high fees than fixed annuities due to the fact that these annuities require more work on the part of the company that you signed a contract with.
